Preparing to Move House: A Practical Guide for Perth Families

Preparing to move house

The move itself is our job. Getting the house ready is where a calm moving day is won or lost. Work through the steps below in order and moving morning takes care of itself.

Start with a plan

Before you pack a single box, walk the house on camera. Filming every room gives you a declutter list, an insurance record and an unpacking reference in one. Then decide how you will pack: do it yourself, split it with us, or hand the whole job over. Most families underestimate packing by two to three full days, so be honest about your time.

Book the truck early

Lock in your date with KD Removals as soon as you know it, especially at the end of the month and during school holidays when good crews book out. Once it is confirmed, reserve parking for the truck at both addresses and check whether your building needs a lift booking or a council permit.

Pack it smart

Wrap plates vertically, like records, so they travel better on their edge. Photograph the cables behind the TV before you unplug anything. You can leave soft items in dresser drawers for us to move wrapped. Keep valuables, documents and jewellery with you, never on the truck.

Prep the whitegoods

Empty, defrost and dry the fridge and freezer 24 to 48 hours before moving day so they travel clean and dry. Run the pantry and freezer down in the final week. Drain the fuel from mowers and disconnect gas bottles, as they cannot legally travel with fuel still in them.

Sort the kids and pets

Pack the kids' rooms last and unpack them first, and let each child carry their own treasure box in the car. For pets, book a sitter or set up one quiet room with food, water and a clearly marked do not open sign, so they stay calm and safe while the truck is loaded.

Pack a first-night box

Set aside one clearly marked essentials box for the first night. Pack phone chargers, toiletries, medications, a change of clothes, the kettle and a few mugs, and a simple plan for dinner. It is the one box you will want to find the moment you walk into the new place.
